November 23, Nantucket, Mass. (Reuters) – In addition to expressing optimism about a potential hostage release in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, President Joe Biden presented pumpkin pies to firefighters on Thursday in observance of the American Thanksgiving holiday.

While on vacation with his family on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, Biden has spoken with foreign leaders about the war during some of his time here.

While he was keeping his “fingers crossed” that a 3-year-old American girl would be among those released first, he informed reporters at the fire station that he would not provide an update on the hostages until Friday.

According to mediators in Qatar, Israel and Hamas will begin a four-day ceasefire on Friday. Later that day, a group of thirteen Israeli women and children who were being held captive will be freed.

Biden’s family has been celebrating Thanksgiving on Nantucket for many years.

Following their delivery of the pies, he and First Lady Jill Biden went back to their lodging, a house belonging to their friend David Rubenstein, the billionaire co-founder of the massive private equity firm The Carlyle Group.

Biden earlier on NBC urged people to put their attention toward working together to solve problems and ending animosity in American society.

The Democratic nominee for reelection in 2024, Joe Biden, may face the front-runner for the Republican nomination, former President Donald Trump. “Today is about coming together,” Biden said.

When questioned at the fire station about his thoughts for American citizens Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich, who are being held in Russia, the president replied, “We ain’t giving up.”
